ice2sea MISMIP3D: what is it?

ice2sea MISMIP3D is a model intercomparison exercise similar to MISMIP (Marine Ice Sheet Model Intercomparison Project) developed a couple of years ago with the aim to evaluate marine ice sheet models along a flowline. MISMIP3D applies to planview models, i.e. incorporating two horizontal dimensions. The model setup is very close to MISMIP and considers ice flow in one direction. However, the perturbation experiments result in a curved grounding line, hence leading to buttressing effects, which could not be evaluated within MISMIP. We used the full Stokes model Elmer/Ice as the benchmark to which other models will be tested, both in a diagnostic and in a prognostic fashion.

ice2sea MISMIP3D: experimental setup

ice2sea MISMIP3D is developed within the FP7 ice2sea project by the PIs listed above. However, the participation in the intercomparison exercise is completely open to the public. Everyone that has an ice sheet model (at least 2D planform) capable of handling grounding lines (transition of the ice sheet and the ice shelf) can participate. A complete description of the experiments is given below.

History

Version 1.0: This contains the basic setup and initial experiments (basal sliding perturbation).
Version 1.1: slight correction in output of files.
Version 1.2: correction of accumulation value of 0.5 and small typos in A.2 and A.3

File upload

All files should be either 'zipped' or 'tarred' together into one major file, which is uploaded via anonymous ftp to:

ftp://ftp.ulb.ac.be/pub/exchange/fpattyn/incoming

Please make sure that the uploaded filename does not contain special characters or spaces (it does not work on this UNIX machine), and send an email to fpattyn@ulb.ac.be, since these files only reside on the server for 1 to 2 weeks before they are automatically deleted.

Deadlines

Deadlines for submission of results is 29 February 2012. Submitted files can be zipped or tarred and uploaded to the ftp site: ftp://ftp.ulb.ac.be/pub/exchange/fpattyn/incoming. Please send an email to fpattyn@ulb.ac.be to confirm the upload. The uploaded filenames should not contain spaces nor special characters.

Participation

If you wish to participate, please send an email to fpattyn@ulb.ac.be, so that we can put you on the mailing list to notify you of changes, developments, deadlines, etc.
